A Look at the Vending Industry: Articles Four and Five

You have to like the "never late for work" part. Which brings me to my point. With most locations, you can service your machines when ever you want. You don't have to punch in, just tell your client when you'll be there. You may have to work out a good time for them, but it's normally up to you when you want to check and fill the machines. Okay, and no advertising? They're right, you never have to advertise your products, it's already done for you. Since it's already done, keep brand awareness in mind when purchasing machines to. Machines that are product display friendly aren't designed to take advantage of all of that free advertising. Display windows are a must.

This is an interesting view on the benefits of operating a vending route. If your kids are old enough to help out, get em involved! It will be fun for the whole family. The kids can make a few extra dollars, you know they'll love that part. Consider how the extra income will pay for everyday expenses too; doctor bills, credit card bills, school bills, new bikes, new clothes, it goes on and on. Then there are the things you've been dreaming of owning like; a new motorcycle, a new boat, a new car, or a bigger house...even family vacations. Sounds good doesn't it? A vending business allows you to spend more time with your family, and the kids get to learn work habits that will stick them for the rest of their lives.

VENDING IS AN ALL CASH BUSINESS. In the next 5 minutes; one million quarters will go through vending machines. Vending is a 42 billion dollar a year industry, the largest all cash industry in the world. There are no back checks, credit risks, accounts receivables, or other collection problems that typically plague business owner's. Vending machine sales in locations such as plants, factories, schools, colleges and offices outpaced manual sales by over 50% between 2002 and 2007. Income wise, "A typical 45 Select machine carrying 45 snacks (10 to 20 of them) generate $5,200 to $7,800 in annual sales. The bigger the machine, the higher the revenue!

NOW THAT'S A LOT OF QUARTERS!! It comes from spare change in someone's pocket or a measly buck out of their wallet. An impulse buy to satisfy their hunger or thirst. We in America are all about consumption, and we want it now. It's what makes vending such an attractive business to get into. You better check your heart first! It takes talent, dedication and hard work. Dedicate yourself, plan for success and you really can make your vending business what you've always dreamed of. Vending has become a symbol of America's quest for convenience, operating 24 hours around the clock, seven days a week. Vending machines have been described, accurately, as "labor storage devices","unattended points of sales" and "robotic retailers." Total sales through vending machines have grown from $600 million in 1946 to more than $41 billion in 2006. Dollar volume grew more than 160% in the decade from 1980 to 1990, and has grown almost 150 percent in the ensuing decade. Amusement and music equipment grossed an additional $6 billion plus in 2006.

So why should you get into the vending business? The information and statistics are based on market research conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Forbes Magazine and Vending Times.

VENDING IS A BUSINESS THAT YOU CAN START PART-TIME AND STILL KEEP YOUR REGULAR JOB. If you position yourself within your community as a trusted and dependable person...the rest is cake! I've posted other articles on the web tackling the "Location" issue, and for good reason. No location, no vending machine, no money! Try the places you're familiar with or a location where someone you know works. Get the easy ones out of the way first and the hard ones will follow.

Now, the Vending Times and Forbes people are telling the truth, "the more machines you own the higher the profits." Just don't spread yourself too thick too quick, try to keep your locations in a centralized area when starting out. Get a feel for what you're doing first.

Selling the Location

We've receive a lot of requests for an article on how to locate machines. People want to know what to say or the best way to get into a particular business with their machines. The truth is, locating is different for every single person. There is no magical script that will win you every location. The best way to locate machines is to use the method that you are most comfortable with. There are a couple of hints and tricks that we can share with you that may make these methods a little bit easier:

Present It As A Service To The Location. "This machine is going to provide your customers with a nice snack/drink without leaving your store". "Your Employees are going to use this vending machine instead of running across the street to get a snack/drink, since they are staying here they will be more productive."

Always Talk To The Right Person. Sometimes it is difficult to determine who that person is. It needs to be someone who has the authority to allow your machine into the business. Many times a manager or supervisor does not have this authority. The best way to approach this is to always ask for the owner. If the owner is not available ask to see someone who has the authority to approve your machines.

For Bulk Vendors, Take the Machine With You. If you are locating bulk vending machines it will sometimes help to have the machine with you. This way the business owner can see that it won't take up too much space and that it is an attractive machine. If they can see and feel the machine they are more likely to accept it into their business.

Make Friends With the Receptionist. In an office environment most managers and owners are bombarded daily with salesmen trying to get a moment of their time. The receptionist is the gatekeeper for these managers and owners. She/he ultimately decides who gets in to see them and who does not. Try to be-friend the receptionist and you will have a better chance at seeing the person you need to talk to.

Dress For The Location. If you are going into a corporate office a business suite or corporate casual attire is appropriate. If you are going into a mom and pop operation you may want to dress more casual as to not intimidate them.

Always Keep Your Promises. If you get a location and you tell them that you will install the machine on Wednesday, make sure that you are there on Wednesday! If for some reason you cannot install the machine on the date that you stated make sure you call the location and let them know why.

Don't let Rejection Get To You. The average person locating vending machines will get less than 20% of the locations that they approach. That is hearing the word "no" an awful lot. Do not let this get to you. If you take it personally you will be out of this business before you start. Forge ahead and never stop, that is the key to locating.
